Our master facility plan for this library, serving a population of 207,300 spread over 5,522 square miles, included recommendations for three new branch libraries ranging in size from 8,500 to 31,000 SF and a new 75,000 SF Main Library. We also recommended one expansion project and one renovation project (the former Main Library will become a downtown Yuma branch library. The total square footage of library space for the District Library will be 171,105 at an estimated total cost of $53,765,000 (the amount of the voted approved bond election). The Yuma library also operates two media centers in elementary schools located 36 and 65 miles from Yuma. Our master plan included recommendations for these centers. Our process involved focus groups, an in-library user survey, work with a large citizens advisory committee, and several one-on-one interviews with County, City, and private individuals. We made two presentations to the Board of Supervisors. All of the recommended projects will be completed in 2009.

In 2001 we prepared a master facility plan for this capitol city. Following presentation of our final report, the Council voted to fund a $30 million branch library expansion program. We were next hired for three additional projects: site selection studies and building programming for two facilities and a system wide information technology plan. In 2006 the Mayor asked us to advise he and the Council on a plan to move the projects forward.

A master plan for this fast growing suburb north of Dallas addressing facility needs, collections, information technology, staffing, and capital and operational budget estimates.
During the study we mapped the entire city, dividing it into four quadrants, facilitated several focus groups, conducted a telephone survey, and interviewed staff and the Library Board. We also held a one-day planning retreat with the Board, Friends, Mayor, members of the City Council, and Library staff. Following a successful bond election (success was forecast in the telephone survey) we prepared a building program for the new Central Library. The building, dedicated in 2007, houses under one roof a 100,000 SF Library and a new City Hall of equal size.

We developed a 25-year Facilities Master Plan. Our process included focus groups with public, staff, community leaders and Library Board, detailed mapping and demographic analysis of each of six existing libraries, a physical assessment of each building, and presentation of findings to the Library Board, the public at large, and elected officials. A special aspect of the project was a full-scale building program for a proposed new library and history center. Work is now underway on implementing the first two of the recommended facilities.

We completed a Master Plan for all facilities, complete with capital and operational budget estimates. As part of the study project we held two design charrettes, one for a 40,000 SF regional library and the other for the Central Library. The Mayor accepted the Master Plan and recommended to the Metro Council (the city of Louisville and Jefferson County merged in 2002 to form a metropolitan government unit). We held focus groups with the public and staff throughout the area, facilitated several Town Hall meetings, mapped each of the 17 library locations, and conducted one-on-one interviews with 19 key leaders throughout Louisville and Jefferson County. The Master Plan work followed an earlier study we had completed of facility needs

For the Emmet O’Neal Library, located in the Birmingham suburban community of Mountain Brook, we first prepared a needs assessment study, including a design charrette. Based upon the study and the charrette, plans were approved for an almost complete rebuilding of the existing building to become a new 40,000 SF facility. We were next engaged to prepare the building program statement, review architectural plans, and advise the Library on several matters regarding collections, shelving arrangements, and opening day ceremonies. The building, almost totally funded by private dollars, was dedicated April 8, 2001.
