As I sit here writing this simple note of thanks, I struggle to express the profound work that your team of professionals brought to Taipei American School and the library. We asked for a professional team of visionaries who understood current best practice in the field of library science, and we got it. Beth and Brad challenged us to look at our current practice in a new light and to explore possibilities for change that can improve service and enhance student learning. They understood the very human resistance to change that some teachers expressed and worked in non-threatening ways to build understanding and readiness among the wider faculty.
Brad brought a vision for possibilities and a creativity that was undeterred by the fragile nature of the structure. We could not have imagined this process without him. Having an architect on the team at this stage of the process allowed us to explore concepts of both service and facility design, moving among them, developing them simultaneously with the guidance of professionals on both sides of the coin. His desire to work with young people and his approachable style were very much appreciated.

I had the opportunity to interact and spend time with Dick while he worked for the Champaign Public Library. Dick is an expert in libraries and library buildings … in tune with what libraries throughout the country are doing and he is knowledgeable about all of the needs that libraries must meet today (technology, collections, programs, meeting space, etc.) Dick delivered what he promised and he met deadlines. He skillfully conducted a number of public meetings to gain information and input from the community … I sat in on many of those meetings and as extremely impressed with his experience, wisdom, and ability to communicate effectively with people of various walks of life and interests. He was easy to talk to and open to questions and ideas. He infused us with a sense of excitement about the building project. Staff was able to give input and Dick was able to talk about what “could be” for our new library. He truly listened to public and staff suggestions and was continually refining the program as he met with people. One exciting thing he did was to hold a series of charrettes that allowed staff and embers of the public to make suggestions about the building design and layout. People spoke very positively about that experience afterward.

When you talk to Waters (Richard L.), you ask him a question; you get an answer right now, a direct answer.
